Own The Worlds Oldest Steinway Piano
from Steinway
Every Steinway piano has a serial number, and information is kept on record, including the day it was completed, the style, the craftsman who made it, as well as where and to whom it was sold.
The owner of the oldest Steinway can have their Steinway piano restored or substituted for a new or comparable Steinway piano.
The winning piano has been in the same family since purchased in Chicago in 1859. Passed down from generation to generation, Krueger noted that youngsters weren't allowed to play the instrument.
You have discovered the oldest & fully complete Steinway concert grand breathing and...now for the very first time, it is being offered for sale to the public.
Pianos, like some pets, are bought and loved, then slowly forgotten. They become dusty and out of tune, sitting and waiting until someone decides they want to play again fifteen years later. But what happened? It's out of tune, dirty and doesn't sound enjoy it used to. Do you dispose of it? You could, but there are better options, like piano restoration. Piano restoration can make any old instrument come alive again and work as well or better than it once did. Imagine that gorgeous old baby grand, cleaned up and in tune, prepared to be played again. An excellent piano technician can make your old piano sound better than it ever did, even when it was new.
As with other instrument, pianos have limited life-time. Still, different parts on pianos also have different life spans, and this is probably one of the main reasons piano restoration can be so effective/ As an example, on an instrument that saw heavy use over its life, the hammers can be worn while the soundboard maybe alive and kicking, so to speak, for decades more.
Thus, having a piano technician look at your instrument every couple years and replace worn parts can get rid of the need for deeper, more intensive restoration later. Though piano restoration is a very good thing, it should only be done on expensive pianos or on pianos with sentimental value, as it is also relatively costly.
Its cost lies in the tediousness and the time involved in rebuilding or refurbishing a badly damaged or decrepit piano. As an example, imagine a piano where some of the action parts, like the hammers, ribs and strings, are still in good condition, but the body is worn and cracked in areas, and the bridges are just going to go out.
A great piano restorer could rebuild and replace the worn parts and tweak the alright parts so they're better than before. An excellent guideline is that, when a piano technician assesses your piano and says repair, the cost will be mild to medium depending on the repair. Maintenance is in the same bracket, but restoration is a clue that it is getting more expensive, and rebuilding is even more intensive.
So while restoration may be an excellent venture if you enjoy your piano immensely, if it holds sentimental or historical value or if it is valuable enough to justify the expense, don't do it if you've only lukewarm feelings about the piano and don't make use of it much. You will be fortunate marketing your piano to a technician who will rebuild and resell it, and buying a newer one with part of the money from the sale.
The second definition of value is that the piano won't depreciate in price as quickly as many other commodities. In my experience vintage, restored Steinway pianos hold their price better than any other investment in the piano world.
Another great investment in the piano world is vintage restored Mason and Hamlin pianos. For decades there has been an argument over which piano is better, Steinway or Mason and Hamlin. For my part this is like comparing apples and oranges. The two brands have different qualities in sound and touch. From a quality of construction standpoint the pianos are different but equally well constructed. From a pianistic angle I would have to say "de gustibus". One thing is very clear, in my shop: Steinway pianos are easier to sell.
Another category of good investments in the piano world are the Yamaha, Kawai, and Boston pianos. These pianos are less expensive and are valuable as good sounding, reliable work horses if a Steinway or Mason and Hamlin piano isn't for you. These brands are a fine investment in the satisfaction of owning a really good instrument.
Finally, virtually any brand of piano can have value as an origin of satisfaction. It doesn't have to be a a costly or famous brand. What is important is the pleasure you get out of playing or hearing the piano. For this purpose it is significant to get confirmation from an efficient piano professional that your piano purchase will perform reliably. Good luck, and choose wisely.
